New ways for people living with dementia to continue reading for enjoyment.
Escaping into a good book can provide a simple yet powerful way to reduce stress, keep the mind active and improve mood.
And with more than 1 million people estimated to be living with dementia in the UK by next year, we believe reading for enjoyment for those with the condition needs greater consideration.
Among the self-help books, advice and memoirs there is little provision for people wanting to continue reading for enjoyment.
It's a priority for us here at Equal Arts. We're developing a series of books, created with and for people living with dementia to spark conversation and intrigue between readers, their families and friends.
Douglas Hunter, our chief executive, said: "There needs to be a real shift in what's available. Instead of speaking to a person's area of deficit, which is their memory, we need books that stimulate curiosity and imagination, and which can better support people to continue doing something they’ve long enjoyed."

"We know that many people living with dementia want to continue to read and there is a need for activities and resources that enable this.
"We support Equal Art's work to develop books with and for people living with dementia and look forward to seeing the new series of books and opportunities they present.” Gemma Jolly, head of Health & Wellbeing at the Reading Agency.
"A must-have tool for people caring for those with dementia. It is deliberately designed for people with different stages of dementia and shows that Sarah Lawrance has a deep understanding of this condition.
"It is written in a way that gives people with dementia dignity and shows respect. So many situations show people talking down, or over people with dementia. This book doesn't. It treats people with dementia as valuable people, capable of enjoyment. I hope she writes another book." Amazon review of Bewick Tales
